Our latest VR short is shot. Teleport Me. A comical little 360 short, shot in our garage over an afternoon. Just wanted to create some content that was light hearted. I think we succeed.
We were also testing things for future project which I wanted to share, but I’m guessing you may already know them.
Scale - Scale can be a big deal in VR. In some of our other test shorts, you can really tell when the scale is off. By that, I mean the tripod high isn’t quite right. therefore you’re either looking up or down at people. In film this works well, as you’re creating an emotional response. In VR, it doesn’t come across quite like that. In Pass the Parcel we had you sat down, so our gangster was towering over you. Dominating the conversation. When he was lacking, he would give distance, creating space and easing the moment. With Teleport me - we took it to the extreme. But spoilers can - well, spoil things - so you’ll just have to see what I mean. But the effect is really cool. I wrote it into the script to make sense and I think it works.
Helpful hint: Place the base of the camera rig (in our case an Gopro Omni) at the base of the subjects chin. That way, the eyes line should be level with the horizon. At least it seems to work for us.
Stitch lines - Stitch lines will always be an issue / concern when filming VR. We usually get away with it quite well, as they’re nearly unseen in Pass the Parcel and Seance. This time, no so much. At least you can really tell when editing. But it’s all a bit of fun. Tip - block your scenes with the actors before hand, letting them know the stitch lines so they won’t linger in them.
2D Footage - It stretches. Doesn’t look the best, you loose quality and don’t turn around otherwise you’ll see the line, but works for something like this. Pick your shots well. I hope we did.
VR - VR is cool. Everyone we do makes me want to do the next. We have loads of ideas written, just need time and actors to pull them off. Heads up - we have a cool horror shot for Halloween. That’s your thanks for reading this far.
Hope shootings going well. Speak soon. Adrift.
